Deepak Bansal Personal Statement for Dental School

I developed a passion for Dentistry early in life due to a traumatic incident I experienced during my childhood. While growing up in India I had an accident which caused avulsion of my upper front teeth. I went to see a local dentist who fixed it as best he could. However, the tooth was actually dead and my family was unaware of this. Years later when I went to see an orthodontist he took an X-ray and informed us that my tooth was dead. He referred me to an implantologist. I received an implant with a crown, which later became loose and caused me some pain. Eventually the problem was fixed permanently with a bridge. During this process I became fascinated with the field of dentistry and the skills the professionals in the field had, but I was also frustrated with the level of care available in my country, especially in the rural areas. This is my motivation to pursue a career as a Dental Surgeon.

One of the characteristic of the dental school I’d like to attend is that it has a highly qualified and diverse group of students with a variety of educational backgrounds, life experiences and professional goals. I believe I bring these qualities to the program because of having received my Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from a college affiliated with a teaching hospital located in India. While my undergraduate education was top rate and addressed dental procedures similar to other programs, it is unique to what most students pursuing a DDS in the United States have experienced. This unique perspective will enable me to enrich the experience of the students and even the professors in the program I choose to attend.

I’m well prepared for a graduate program in dental surgery because I’ve already practiced many of the procedures I’ll be learning about and refining my skills in. These include root canal therapies, restorations, dentures, scaling, extractions and various orthodontic procedures. I’ve also had the opportunity to practice helping patients maintain good standards of infection control and providing them with general oral health care instructions.

I not only want to acquire the knowledge and skills to become leader in my field, but also to merge my passion for Dentistry with my compassion and foresight to make a difference in my community. During my undergraduate work in India I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to participate in multiple dental camps in schools and villages near my hospital. While helping the people at these camps I became aware of the need for skilled dental professionals and also the impact we can have on people’s lives.

After obtaining my DDS certification, I plan to work in US for a few years and then return my home country of India to work in the city that I come from. My long term goal is to work for the betterment of oral hygiene in both the urban and rural areas of India in order to improve the lives of the people who live there. I’d like to not only minimize oral health related issues, but also to provide the appropriate care when issues do occur. Ideally no one I treat will have to have the same experience I did when I was young.
