University of Michigan Dental School Admissions Requirements

The university of Michigan dental school admissions dictates some 50 hours of prerequisite courses which vary from English composition through to Biochemistry which all have to be passed with a minimum grade of “B”

They expect all students to be successful academically and the average GPA of accepted students is currently 3.5.

The Dental Admission Test or DAT has to be taken. This should be taken at least a year before when you wish to start your course to ensure that you have a chance to retake should you be disappointed with your initial results. The tests can be taken a maximum of three times but you have to wait at least 90 days before taking the test again. The university of Michigan dental school admissions will not wait for you to take the test again should your results not meet their standards. The national average for the test results is around 17, the Michigan dental school expects a minimum of 19 across all sections of the test.

The university of Michigan dental school admissions now require all applicants to demonstrate that they have conducted a minimum of 100 hours of dental shadowing or volunteer work within a dental environment. Applicants without this experience will no longer be considered.

You will also have to provide 3 letters of recommendation, two from science professors and the third from a practicing dentist or other professional person. The expectation is that the third letter should come from the dentist who you have shadowed.

University of Michigan Dental School Admissions Process

All information for your application needs to be supplied through the Association of Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS). This service allows you to apply to all dental schools electronically using common information uploaded into their system.

Applications need to be made from the 4th of June; the earlier your application is made the more likely that you will be selected.
