Dental Graduate Schools

Being accepted by dental graduate schools is very difficult indeed. Most have around just a hundred places but often have thousands of applicants for those places; so your chances of selection are very slim indeed. Overall less than half of those applying for dental graduate school will gain a place at all. Dental graduate schools place a very high regard on academic and extracurricular activities and will generally only accept truly excellent students.

Applying to graduate dental schools

Dental graduate schools are applied to through the Association of Dental Schools Application Service which is a service provided by the American Dental Education Association (ADEA). AADSAS allows you to upload every part of your application into their database and then send your completed applications through to each graduate dental school that you wish to apply to. Your application must be complete and meet every one of the requirements if you wish to stand any possibility of acceptance. Most applications are made from the beginning of June through to the end of the year before you wish to start your course, you should check individual schools for their specific dates. In general however the earlier you apply the more chance you have of acceptance.

Dental graduate admission requirements

Most dental graduate schools require you to have completed a bachelor’s degree although some will accept you after three years of your four year course. You must have completed a host of prerequisite courses which typically cover mainly science subjects and English composition or a similar course. Your application will almost certainly be disregarded if you have not passed the various prerequisite courses due to the high volume of applicants for every place.

GPA is another important measure that is considered when judging your application, an average GPA of 3.5 was achieved in recent years by those that have been accepted to dental graduate schools.

Your Dental Admission Test is another area in which you have to do well. The average DAT result of students accepted has been a little over 19 while the national average result is in the region of 17. Therefore you need to ensure that you do very well on this test before you apply.

Most dental graduate schools require you to provide between 2 and 4 letters of recommendation that should come from faculty members and many require letters from practicing dentists that you have shadowed.
