Why You Need DAT Test Preparation

One of the requirements of every dental school around the country is a good Dental Admission Test (DAT) result.

The test is scored out of 30 and is a multiple choice test that runs through 280 questions in 5 hours. These tests cost $360 to take and are taken at Prometric testing centers around the country at almost any time of the year.

The DAT can be taken up to a maximum of three times with at least 90 days between each sitting and tests the following:

  • Your Natural Science Knowledge
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Quantitative reasoning
  • Problem solving skills

Required DAT test scores

The DAT test scores are awarded out of a possible maximum 30 marks and are awarded in six different areas, 4 for each of the main areas listed above, a science average and an overall average test score. The average test result is between 17 and 18 and each point above or below this is a standard deviation. So for those students taking the DAT dental admission test approximately 13% of those taking the test will gain a 19 or more and just 2% of those taking the test will score 20+.

Most schools state that the dental school admissions test result should be over 16, however with the high number of applicants to a limited number of places the average test result achieved by those taking the dental school admission test that are subsequently accepted is 19.

When you apply to sit the DAT test you will be given access to a website where you can sit one of their past DAT practice tests however this is the same practice that every other candidate will have access to and the questions are very unlikely to be repeated within the tests that you sit.
