Dental School Admissions

Dentistry is one of the more difficult areas for you to apply; dental school admissions requirements are extensive and can take a considerable amount of time to complete. You must ensure that you plan your application carefully to ensure that you supply all of the required information before the deadlines. It is recommended for instance that you take your DAT test at least a full year before you intend to begin your studies.

Requirements for Dental School Admission

Each dental school has slightly different requirements so you should look at each dental school guide to familiarize yourself with exactly what they will require. Admission to dental schools will require you to have completed at least 2 years of undergraduate education although it should be noted that almost 95% of applicants have already gained their bachelors degree and completed 4 or more years of college.

It is not necessary to be a science major to win a place at dentist school however they are by far the majority of successful students.

It is also recommended that you spend some time observing or shadowing a practicing dentist to acquaint yourself fully with the profession. For some schools this is a requirement and you will be expected to provide a letter of recommendation from the dentist.

The Dental Admissions Test (DAT)

All potential students are required to have taken the DAT. This is an exam that will test your abilities in a number of areas including perceptual ability, problem solving and scientific knowledge. Most dental schools require you to have gained a score of between 16 and 20 out of 30 for admission. You can only take the exam a maximum of three times, if you require to take it more than three times you can seek special permission.

List of Dentals School Admissions Requirements

The following is a list of things that are required for most dental school admissions:

  • Your DAT test score
  • College and School transcripts
  • Resume
